Now for some explaining. These characteristics describe your highest IV on a pokemon, and are found underneath the information on where you caught your pokemon. For example, if a starly has the characteristic of "Alerts to sounds", it either has 31,26,21,16,11,6,or 1 IV in speed. Most likely , it will be either 31,26,or 21. There is still a possibility that it can be 16,11,6,or 1, but most likely not. This is because Speed is your highest IV. Unless your other IV's are crap, you will either have 31,26,or 21 IV in speed.

If your pokemon has a tie for highest IV, the characteristic will be the first one that comes in this order: HP,Attack,Defense,Special Attack,Special Defense,Speed. For example, you have a starly with 31 IV in Speed and 31 IV in Attack. The characteristic will be "Likes to thrash about" because Attack comes before speed.

Another example:
Starly with the following IV's.
25 HP IV
19 Attack IV
16 Defense IV
26 Special Attack IV
20 Special Defense IV
29 Speed IV

The Characteristic will be "Quick to flee
